Description of Part V of the Great Instauration Forerunners, or Anticipations of the Second Philosophy The fifth part of the Great Instauration comprises a storehouse for useful conclusions or axioms, but which are not yet proved by the New Method. Bacon included in this part such things as he had himself discovered, proved or added—‘not however according to the true rules and methods of interpretation, but by the ordinary use of the understanding in inquiring and discovering’. He speaks of this part as being ‘for temporary use only, pending the completion of the rest’, and hopes that his speculations might ‘serve in the meantime for wayside inns, in which the mind may rest and refresh itself on its journey to more certain conclusions’. Following his example, this is the section where anyone else’s useful speculations would also be placed, pending scrutiny and proving by means of the New Method.
