Portrait miniature by Nicholas Hilliard of Francis Bacon in his 18th year, painted in Paris in 1578/9. The Latin inscription reads: ‘Si tabula daretur digna animum mallem’ (transl: ‘It would be preferable if a picture deserving of his mind could be brought about’).
