Athena

Engraved illustration on the title-page of the 1641 French edition of Francis Bacon’s Wisdom of the Ancients, entitled La Sagesse Mysterieuse des Anciens, published in Paris by Michel Bobin.

Inscribed on Athena’s shield is a Latin motto, ‘Obscuris vera involvens’ (transl: ‘Truth is enveloped in obscurity’). The Latin motto on the scroll above Athena’s head reads ‘Sic fulget in umbras’ (transl: ‘Thus it shines in the shadows’).

Information concerning Pallas Athena as a primary symbol of the Mystery schools can be read in the book Arcadia by Peter Dawkins, published by the FBRT (see Publications).

FBRT members receive regular essays and discussion papers on these and other subjects.
